Casa Batlló is one of Antoni Gaudí's most extraordinary works, located at number 43 of the famous Passeig de Gràcia. Built in 1877, it was completely renovated by Gaudí between 1904 and 1906, transforming it into a total work of art.
The undulating facade, covered in colorful mosaics and ceramic fragments (trencadís), resembles the scales of a dragon. The interior is a masterpiece of organic design: no straight lines, light that changes gradually, and an inner courtyard with blue tiles that fade from top to bottom.
Josep Batlló i Casanovas, a wealthy textile industrialist, purchased the building in 1903 and commissioned Gaudí to completely renovate it. The result was one of the most original houses in the world, part of the so-called "Manzana de la Discordia" (Block of Discord) — the block where three modernist masterpieces compete.
Legend has it that the facade represents Sant Jordi (Saint George) and the dragon: the roof is the dragon's back, the first-floor balcony is the beast's skull, and the tower with the cross is the spear of the patron saint of Catalonia.
