Casa Milà, known as La Pedrera ("the stone quarry"), is the last great civil work by Antoni Gaudí, built between 1906 and 1912. Located at the corner of Passeig de Gràcia and Carrer de Provença, the building is an ode to nature with its undulating limestone facade.
The famous roof terrace is a surreal landscape of warrior-chimneys and turrets that look like medieval sentinels. The attic, with its brick catenary arches, houses a permanent exhibition on Gaudí's work.
Pere Milà and his wife Roser Segimon commissioned Gaudí for their new residence. The result was so innovative that Barcelona locals nicknamed it "La Pedrera" (the quarry) for its raw appearance. The building was the first in the world to feature an underground garage and a load-bearing structure without internal walls.
