The Sagrada Familia is the unfinished masterpiece of Antoni Gaudí and the most visited monument in Spain. Construction began in 1882 and continues today, with completion expected by 2026. The building blends Gothic and Art Nouveau styles into a unique vision, featuring narrative facades, tree-like columns, and stained glass windows that flood the interior with colored light.
A UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005, the basilica is stunning for its 18 towers — the tallest dedicated to Jesus Christ will reach 172.5 meters — and for interiors that resemble a stone forest illuminated by rainbows.
In 1882, the architect Francisco de Paula del Villar laid the first stone. A year later, the young Antoni Gaudí took over the project's direction and transformed it radically: he abandoned the original Neo-Gothic design to create something never seen before. Gaudí dedicated the last 43 years of his life exclusively to the Sagrada Familia, even living on the construction site.
After his death in 1926, construction continued following his models and drawings, which partly survived the Spanish Civil War. Today, thanks to digital technologies, Gaudí's dream is nearing completion.
